Hi All,

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We have started sending Connell a weekly report on our efforts on behalf of AMI from the national office. She suggested that we share these with you so you know what we have been doing!

Andrea and Jacquie attended the Nov. 20^th Interfaith Services in Washington, DC at The Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church, where they distributed

AMI recruitment collateral and acquired several new memberships on site. Jon Cooper, professional photographer, was on site as well capturing the celebration of Service for AMI’s National Mother of the Year, Ernestine Allen.

We are still receiving memberships in conjunction with the fall magazine mailing. We have received several dozen as a result of this membership drive.

We reviewed the “Books for Beginners” presentation that the Nevada Pilot Program is working on with the Bradley Group.

We fulfilled several shipping requests for AMI collateral. We are getting low on Mom to Mom magazines (approx. 100 left). We will need to reprint for the spring.

We are seeking competitive jewelry bids to present at the AMI Jan. board meeting.

We are working on follow up with Sandy on the donation that the interfaith service gave to needy Thanksgiving families, adding a clip from the service to the website, newsletter, etc.

Dianne submitted to the UN Council on Women the AMI statement that outlines the problem of domestic violence against pregnant women. We will be sharing this information with our members in the upcoming magazine.

We are working on convention planning and budgeting so we can drop a mailing and launch the convention website soon. We still need speaker confirmations from Ree Drumond (Connell) and the keynote speaker (Andrea).

We are following up on sponsorship opportunities with Chesapeake Energy. We are working on the collateral for the AMI “Likes” program which will include a page on the website and a flyer.

We submitted the final report for the Dupont Foundation Grant

We are following up on the endowment fund deposit into the AMI general operating funds

State Charters – Assisting State Presidents/Area Coordinators with State Charter information, creating helpful instructions for the process.

MOY, YMOY, MOA – Processing Nomination forms, contacting candidates regarding their nomination and appropriately sending out to state/national contacts, tracking info in excel. We process several of these each week!

Orders & Requests – Fulfilling all orders, requests for AMI Collateral and merchandise.

Memberships – Memberships are continuing to be managed, processed and updated in the AMI database.

General Support – We continue to strive to provide prompt support to our Executive Board, Sponsors, Members and Staff via emails, phone calls, faxes and mail.

New Parenting Class Manual

Dear friends and members,

Thanks to a grant offered by Hilliard Lyons Community Outreach Program American Mothers, Inc. in Kentucky created a bound manual for it "Power of Positive Parenting" classes.

Now all the handouts and information is conveniently bound together in this packet in the order of the classes. All the information is together at your finger tips.

Classes are being offered at the South Oldham Library and at other locations via American Mothers, Inc. For more information please contact Betsy Lowe at 749-4339.

2011 Celebration of Motherhood at the State Capitol

May 14, 2011 "Celebration of Motherhood" at the State Capitol in Frankfort, KY.

Today is a day of honoring mothers; two in particular, Mrs. Susan Hill, 2011 Kentucky Mother of the Year, and Mrs. RuthAnn Sullivan, 2011 Kentucky Young Mother. It is also a day of recognizing the creative writing of three 5th grade students that wrote about their mothers.

The program went as follows: I welcomed everyone out, Pearl Taylor, Mother of the Year from 2001 gave the invocation, and then I introduced RuthAnn Sullivan.

She spoke for 10 minutes on the influence of evil and how we need to prepare our homes and families. I presented her with a roses, her Young Mother necklace, an engraved silver tray, a certificate from American Mothers, a letter from Senator Rand Paul and a Proclamation from Judge Executive of Oldham County, David Voegle.

Next I introduced Susan Hill. She spoke for 10 minutes sharing many joyous moments in raising her family.

I presented her with a roses, her Mother of the Year pin (presented previously), an engraved silver tray, a certificate from American Mothers, a letter from Senator Rand Paul and a Proclamation from Mayer Fisher of Louisville, KY.

I then introduced the 5th grade essay program and announced that we were here to honor our three state finalist.

Cole Geredmann took 3rd place - he read his essay. I had already presented him with a certificate and gift card to Barnes and Noble at his school, but today I presented him with a proclamation from Judge Executive David Voegle and a gift certificate from Osbourne Books.

This repeated with the second place winner, Abby Harlan,

and the first place winner, Morgan Jemtrud.

It was my pleasure to also publicly announce that Morgan was named the 2nd place winner in the National Essay Contest. I presented her with a letter, certificate and check for $75. She was thrilled.

We concluded with a brief expression of thanks, and an explanation of what we do in American Mothers. I shared some of the programs that we run in the state. We then adjourned to the Rotunda for photos.

Following the photo session we caravanned to the Candleberry Tea Room for a luncheon. There were approximately 20 that attended the luncheon. What a wonderful lunch.

What a great and successful day. I felt very good about everything that had happened and look forward to seeing RuthAnn Sullivan and Susan Hill share the values of family and home throughout our wonderful state of Kentucky!

National Convention in Salt Lake City

This year's convention was held at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah. The state of Kentucky's President, Mrs. Betsy Lowe along with the state Mother of the Year, Mrs. Susan Hill and the state Young Mother, Mrs. RuthAnn Sullivan were in attendance.

The first day was filled with National Board meetings and orientation meetings. That evening we were treated to dinner and entertainment at Heritage Place. First we had a delicious barbecue, followed by a touring train ride to the first settlement of Utah. There were were entertained with line dancing, folk story telling and more. It was a wonderful evening.

Over the coarse of two day, Betsy Lowe, State President traveled to Locust Grove Elementary School in Centerille, KY and then to Harmony Elementary School in Goshen, KY to make the award presentations to our 5th grade essay contest "What My Mother Means to Me" contest winners.

At Harmony Elementary, Mrs. Lowe presented Cole Gerdemann with 3rd place in the state.

and Abby Harlan with 2nd place in the state. Each of their presentations and essays were shared aloud over the TV school broadcast.

RuthAnn Sullivan, 2011 Young Mother

RuthAnn Sullivan of Peewee Valley was selected as the 2011 Kentucky Young Mother.

RuthAnn Benson Sullivan was born in Salt Lake City, UT, has lived in Naples, FL, and currently resides in Peewee Valley, KY. She studied at Ricks College in Rexburg, ID where she met and married her best friend, Kenn Sullivan. They have been married 16 years and have five beautiful children whom RuthAnn currently home schools for the second time around. Originally, she home schooled due to an upcoming move. Then, after returning to public school for two years, her children beggar, pleaded and bargained to home school again because as her oldest put it, "I get to learn so much more." When she isn't home schooling, she spends her time writing a book, driving kids to activities, helping her husband with his business, and volunteering at church. Her interests include reading, playing piano, studying the Constitution, traveling, video editing, and staying abreast of the news.

Susan Hill of Louisville was selected as the 2011 Kentucky Mother of the Year.

Susan Hill is former President and CEO of Diabetes Care & Education, a company she founded in 1996. At 19-years-old Susan was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She focused her time and energy in learning all she could about the disease and sharing her knowledge with others. She received a Bachelors Degree in Biology from Vanderbilt University in 1975 and a Masters Degree in Food Science and Nutrition from Brigham Young University in 1985. Between degrees, Susan served a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Boston, Massachusetts. She married her husband Robert in 1981. They have three wonderful children, Liz, John and Chris. Susan enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom while the children were young, volunteering at church and directing day camps for children with diabetes. Presently, she is Director of Public Affairs for her Church in Kentucky and on the Board of Eastern Area Community Ministries.

January 2011 State Meeting

Dear Honored Members,

I hope the new year has been good to you so far. We had a very busy year for Kentucky in American Mothers, Inc. last year, but we didn’t get together very much. I so missed seeing you this year. I hope our schedules will allow us a better opportunity to gather and meet.

I hope you have enjoyed the updates on the Kentucky AMI web site. www.KentuckyAMI.blogspot.com. It is there for you and others to enjoy. Because of our web site we were recognized and the recipient of a $2,500 grant from the Hilliard Lions Foundation.

We have much to go over as an organization. There have been some changes regarding the state organizations from the national level. We need to review these changes as a group and decide our direction.

We are hosting the first State Association meeting of the year at my house (6104 Laurel Lane, Prospect, KY) on January 29, 2011 starting at 11:00 am and then going to eat at Verbena Cafe’. Meals range in price from $6.25 to $11.49. This restaurant serves breakfast and lunch all day in a quaint comfortable atmosphere. You can go to their web site and review their menu before coming. 2010 National Convention in New York City

April 28, 2010 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, the 75th Annual National American Mothers Convention is underway.

Board meetings on the second floor, State President meetings just after… a very busy time for us while we are there. One of the most enjoyable elements of the convention is listening to the Mother of the Year and Young Mother speeches.

Betsy with Sunny Welch. Sunny is the National Chairperson for Mother's Against Abuse. This is one of Betsy's favorite programs to support. She distributes booklets entitled "In Control" (for boys), and "Be Strong) for girls.

After the Gala, the Young Mothers and I went on a tour of Manhattan Island, compliments of the Young Mother from New York. We walked from the Waldorf Astoria to the Empire State Building. Upon viewing New York from the top of the Empire State Building we rented a limousine to take us around town.

The limo drove us all around Manhattan including a drive to Central Park.

Harmony students' essays win contest

Three students from Harmony Elementary School are winners in the seventh annual Kentucky Association of American Mothers Inc. 5th Grade Essay Contest. Maggie Nixon Duke won first place, Emily Faith Wheeler, second, and Sierra Robinson, third. Here are their essays:

What does my mom mean to me? My mom means a great personality and always willing to help me when my "plans" don't go as I intended them to. Also, a friend because she is always doing zany things to make me laugh like putting blue streaks in my hair.

When we're together it's like we have our own little world. It's always an adventure when I get to hang out with my mom. I love it when we camp out in the living room and watch our favorite TV shows.

I know she really loves me when she lets me help her with her photography business. It is always fun to be around my mom! Even when I get in trouble I know she will always love me and I will always love her too. I love my mom so much. She is my best friend!

My mother means to me ... love. Almost all mothers are loving, but my mom makes me feel loved in every special way. My mom is someone I can always count on.

My mother is loving because she is always giving me hugs and kisses. She always is patient with people or situations even when I am not. I love when we do crafts together and when she teaches my friends and me how to cook. She makes what seems like such hard work, so much fun because she loves it. She has taught me that I can do anything I put my mind to, if I do it with love; and it's okay to fail as long as I try.

But most of all, she is an optimist. I hope this is something I will learn from her. My mom is the best mom I can ever have.

There's an amazing lady I call mom. Every day she thinks about me. She says she always loves me even when I'm bad. All her actions and thoughts are centered around making me feel safe and loved.

She helps me with my homework, makes my lunches for school (sometimes includes an "I love you" note). Mom will attend all my school performances, and is my biggest cheerleader. She'll even schedule the play dates with my friends.

Mom schedules vacations, like the one time she planned a cruise, when she arranged a trip to Hilton Head. Some other fun things she does is watch girly movies with me. Other times she'll play a board game or come up with a fun craft.

Most of all I love my mom. I can tell her anything. She's the one I go to when I'm sick or hurt, and will always give big hugs.

SPRING MEETING

Dear Friends and members of American Mothers,

Greetings! We have been on a roller coster here in Kentucky with our AMI program. Up here in Louisville and Oldham County we have been teaching “The Power of Parenting Classes” as Goshen Elementary School and Harmony Elementary School. These classes provide lessons on parenting that can influence and make changes for good in our communities. I am very pleased with our dedication to this cause and ask you if you’d be interested in donating one hour a week (for 8 weeks) to teach these lessons in the area where you live. If so, please contact me at betsy4kids@aol.com or 502-749-4339.

We also have had our ups and downs with our search, find and search again for the state Moher of the Year and Young Mother. We approached several wonderful candidates that were nominated by neighbors, clergy, and schools; however, all the MOY candidates refused. We had one Young Mother candidate accept, but then decline as her family is moving this week to Michigan.

We had 48 students entries in the annual 5th Grade Essay Contest “What My Mother Means to Me”. The state judges have finished judging the essays and the 1st place winner has been forwarded to the National competition. We will announce the winner at our State meeting.

After a few changes, the State Meeting is scheduled for April 17 at 10:00 a.m. at the home of Betsy Lowe (6104 Laurel Lane, Prospect, KY). This is also the day of “Thunder Over Louisville.” I hope that is okay with everyone. It is my hope that we can conduct our business, and then enjoy the festivities of Louisville without difficulty. Lunch will follow the meeting at a local restaurant (around $12 per person). Please RSVP to Betsy Manship by April 5.

I am very excited to be attending the National Convention in New York the last week of April. Please let me know if you are attending too. This is the 75th anniversary - Mothers and Diamonds are Forever.

Since we were not able to have our meeting in January or February, we will need you to mail in your AMI dues ($35) to Mark Lowe, State AMI Treasurer, 6104 Laurel Lane, Prospect, KY 40059 - or - you can bring them to the meeting.

At the National Convention in Portland, Oregon Betsy Lowe, National Literacy Chairperson announced the winners of the National Essay Contest. There were 19 states that participated in the contest including Idaho, Oregon, Wyoming, Arizona, Hawaii, Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, Maine, and the great state of Kentucky. The first place essay winner is from Kentucky - Chris Chu, the second place essay winner is from Oklahoma - Stephanie Bradford, and the third place winner is from Texas - Kamish Kabani.

The 74th American Mothers, Inc. National Convention was held at the Embassy Suites in Portland, Oregon from April 23 - April 26. It was a wonderful four day event. At the Wednesday night banquet, Mrs. Bobbie Burbridge Lane was honored for her hours of donated service and her generous monetary donations to AMI in the effort to stop pornography. Betsy Lowe, State President has supported Mrs. Lane since 2002. They have worked hard to change law in Louisville and around the state. On Thursday we had State President's training. We also were priviledged to hear the Young Mothers speeches and attend workshops and hear from some the of the nationals best at mediation in schools, the problems of meth, character development, problems with pornography and internet bullying. We honored the 2008 National Mother of Young Children at the Lunchoen. Thursday evening was the Awards Banquet. Betsy Lowe along with Judith Joe and Ilene Barlow presented the National Awards. Betsy was very pleased to announce the winners of the National 5th Grade Essay contest: 1st place - Chris Chu from Kentucky, 2nd place - Stephanie Bradford from Oklahoma, and 3rd place - Kamish Kabani from Texas.

On Friday, we had the priviledge of hearing the Mother of the Year speeches and then attending the Gold and Silver or Tapestry gatherings. Lunch was in honor of our 2008 National Mother of the Year, Jo Blackwood. Friday evening was honoring the 2009 Young Mothers and the announcement of the 2009 - National Mother of Young Children. Mrs. Kimberly Wright of Nevada was selected. I had several opportunity to get to know Kimberly - she is such a delightful young mom!

Saturday started with the Interfaith Memorial Breakfast. Special attention was given to Phyllis Marriott, and Nancy Hawk, both Past National Presidents. It was followed by the Legacy Project and the Garden tour. What spectacular gardens are seen in Portland.

After the Garden Tour, our expedition to us to the University of Portland for the unvailing of the "Walk of the Heroines - Legacy Walk." I felt so priviledged to be at the very special ceremony to see all the amazing work that had gone into making this beautiful walk and fountain in the name of famous women and mothers.Later that evening was the Gala Dinner. What a spectacular evening. Ms. Betty Jean McGregor from South Carolina was named as the 2009 National Mother of the Year.

5th Grade Parent - Middle School Orientation Night at Goshen Elementary

American Mothers, Inc. was invited to have a booth at "5th Grade Night" at Goshen Elementary School for the parents of rising 5th grade students. The night's intention is to prepare parents for what awaits them in middle school. We had our parenting class sign up sheet out, along with other AMI literature including the Mother's Against Abuse booklets - "In Control" and "Be Strong".

In Control and Be Strong booklets were written for the middle school aged boy (In Control) and middle school aged girl (Be Strong). They are a great resource for kids and adults.

It was a great way to introduce American Mothers, Inc. to parents and share our message.

STATE 5th GRADE ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS

The Kentucky Association of American Mothers, Inc. is pleased to announce the winners of the 2009 5th Grade Essay Contest "What My Mother Means to Me."

Chris Chu, a fifth-grader at Goshen Elementary was inspired to write this essay because his mother is not just a caring mother, but also his best friend, teacher and coach. His essay, "What My Mother Means to Me," won first place in the state contest sponsored by American Mothers, Inc. (AMI). His essay will compete at the national level. The winner at the national level will be announced during American Mothers, Inc. National Convention held in Portland, OR on April 24, 2009.

American Mothers Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening the moral and spiritual foundation of the family and home. "The strength of our future is our children," said Betsy Lowe, State President and AMI National Literacy Chairperson. "I especially enjoy supporting this program because it encourages children to take time to think about what their mother does for them, as well as promote writing and communication skills. I love reading these thoughtful essays. They touch my heart."

There were 98 participants from the around the state, 42 participants from Oldham County in the essay contests. Chu's essay took first place in the state. Three students from Harmony Elementary took second, third and Honorable Mention. Heather Wiley took second place. She states, “I couldn’t live without her, it would be like breathing with no air, seeing with no color, and reading a book with no words”, Kaitlyn Hampton, took third place sharing how her mom shows love for her, and Victoria Hafner’s essay was so impressive she received an Honorable Mention. In her essay she shares how her mother helped her cope with an alcoholic dad and divorce."

Participants in the American Mother's Fifth Grade Essay Contest were required to write a 150-essay essay entitled "What My Mother Means to Me." The contest was open to all fifth-graders in the state. A team of sixth grade teachers from North Oldham Middle School judged the contest using the Rubric Scoring Guide for paragraph, report and essay writing.

American Mothers, Inc. State President, Betsy Lowe of Prospect was at Harmony Elementary School on Tuesday, April 14 to present the three winners from that school with certificates. The presentation was shown on their video morning announcements. She was at Goshen Elementary School on Tuesday, April 21st to present Chris Chu his certificate in front of his 5th grade class. It was broadcast on the school news the following morning. An official awards ceremony will be held at the next American Mothers, Inc. State meeting where each of the winners will be recognized. "They are touching," she said. "They show excellent use of creative expression and language skills."

This is the fifth year for the contest, and Lowe said she appreciates the efforts of schools to create more involvement in the program. She said she hopes the contest doubles in size next year.

The theme is the same, and the winners again will be announced before Mother's Day. The Entry form can be downloaded from http://www.americanmothers.org/.

"Everyone thinks his/her mom is special in many different ways. I consider my mom is not just a caring mother, she is also my best friend, teacher, and coach for life.

Doctors delivered the dreariest news to my mom when I was three years old. "Autism Spectrum Disorder." They predicted I will never be able to catch up with my peer group, academically or socially. That broke my mom's heart. Fortunately, mom never let those words stop her from helping me to achieve my highest potentials. For years, I was reading without comprehending. Mom would spend endless hours reading with me, made sure I understood every word I read. Whenever, I behaved improperly, mom always took time to explain and correct my mistakes.

Today, I am still struggling with many difficulties. But with my mom's help, I am confident, I will be as successful as any of my peer groups. Thank you mom!"

What my mom means to me, my mom means endless hugs on depressing days. She means being the loudest when she cheers me on in Cross Country. Where would I be without food, clothes, a clean house and love? Nowhere. Well, that’s what my mom does. You always know she’s there for you. When you are sad, angry, frustrated or even annoyed she’s there. I love my mom and she loves me. My mother means giggles over silly mistakes, making funny noises on glum days, watching T.V. together, laughing ‘til we cry. My mom in my dictionary means “special.” There’s no one better than my mom. I couldn’t live without her it would be like breathing with no air, seeing the world with no color, and reading a book with no words. It’s just not possible. My mom is the world and more. Thank you mom for everything you do!

My mother means the world to me. She takes care of me when I’m sick and buys me dogs. See how nice my mom is.

My mom helps me when I’m sick by taking my temperature about every hour. She also buys me ice cream even if I’m sick. There was this one time when I was sick with a fever. My mom bought me a new jacket and two little ice cream cups.

My mom rocks because she bought me a puppy when we were moving. She bought me the puppy so I wouldn’t feel bad when we moved. Once we got to Kentucky I didn’t feel sad because my dog is energetic exciting and funny. So probably no mom has thought of that when they moved.

Thank you for reading my piece now. I hope you know what my mom means to me. Now I hope you pick my piece.

My mom means the world to me. She did the most responsible action in someone’s lifetime. She made sure her children weren’t miserable. She conquered the pain that made her ache daily. How did she do this?

My mother put up with my dad while he was an alcoholic. She strained in his lies, insults, and threats. She made sure we were safe while my dad went out to have fun. She tried to help him recover and bring our family back together. She tried to save my tears everyday.

Surprisingly, she did eliminate crying. She did this by spending time and comforting me. It was just too much for her to fix a lifetime crisis. Everyday after the divorce, she talked to me and gave me advice. She paid money to let us talk and get advice from someone.

As I said, my mom did the most responsible action ever.

We are excited to announce AMI will be hosting "Parent to Parent" classes starting January 13, 2009. The session includes 8 weeks of classes presented by Betsy Lowe (AMI State President) and Heather Deshler (2008 YM). Classes will be held on Tuesday mornings starting at 9:00 a.m. running one hour. The place is still TBD. There is a minimal cost to attend is $10 to cover materials.

Jennifer Hancock sang "Who Are You", a most beautiful musical number as intermission between Raelene and Heather Deshler. We were all touched by the words of the song and the sweet spirit she brought to the meeting.

Pearl did a great job at being the Auctionaire!

We were very sad that John Foe and Russ Morgan are in the hospital. We missed their vibrant personalities at the meeting, however Pearl Taylor did an excellent job filling their shoes as the auctionaire. We made $133 in the auction.

11 members from around Kentucky and 3 visitors from Indiana were in attendance at our Annual State Meeting. The program included invited guest speakers, Raelene Hill and Kimberley Shelton. Betsy Lowe announced that AMI has been invited to start AMI Chapter groups in Oldham County Schools, and that the website www.KentuckyAMI.blogspot.com is created, up and running.

Also on the program was remarks from Heather Deshler. We were also blessed to hear a solo by Jennifer Hancock entitled "Who You Are". Chef Salads were served for lunch followed by a delicious apple struddle. The Auction followed lunch. Pearl Taylor did a fabulous job raising prices and moving items for the state fundraiser. The meeting ended with the installation of new officers.

Future fundraisers were discussed. Dates for the next meeting will be announced later!

Award-winning women is "best mom in the world"

A wonderful article was written about Heather Deshler being named 2007 Kentucky Young Mother in the Courier Journal on Wednesday, October 22, 2008.

It was as if they were about to burst...As soon as I asked Heather Deshler's kids what they thought about their mom being the "2008 Kentucky Young Mother," the words spilled out of them. "She's the best mom in the world," said Avery, 11.
"She has so much to do," said Easton, 10.
Collin, 7, piped up about how great she is at sewing. And Zoe, 5, sported a smile that seemed to reach from plonde pigtail to the other.
Deshler, though, stays grounded when she talks about the honor. It's "an opportunity to volunteer and just sort of dedicate some time to spreading the cause of advocating and supporting mothers," she told me.
"I just think it's something that's easy to be overlooked -- what an important role mothers play in our society and our communities. It's a hard job, and it's day to day," she said. "You just get small moments that are very rewarding and the rest of the time it's a lot of worry and work, and it can be hard."
The Crestwood mother is part of American Mothers, Inc., a non-profit group that works to strengthen the moral and spiritual foundation of the family and home. After reviewing a portfolio of Deshler and an essay she wrote about what's most fulfilling in family life, the group picked her in February as the 2008 Kentucky Young Mother.

Most Wonderful Job in the World

Being a mother is the most wonderful job in the world, but the fruits of our labors are not often immediately apparent. Sometimes it’s hard to see the progress or feel the sense of achievement that is easier to measure and identify with other jobs. My dear friend once described it well when she told her husband that in leaving the job force behind to stay at home with her first daughter, she no longer received job performance reviews to help her gauge her success in her most important job. However, because of our human need for validation and because we care so much about being great moms, we look for signs that we are doing the right thing all over. Without a written job description, we do what comes naturally—we compare ourselves, and our children, to other mothers and their children. We compare labor stories, newborn milestones, walking, talking, reading, grades, athletic & musical ability, behavior, college entrance exams, and on and on. And all the better if my son just won the summer swim league championship—right? That must mean I’m a good mother. What about when my daughter can’t read Harry Potter at entrance to Kindergarten like my friend from church? How many of us have let our own feelings of worth about the work we do slip because we compare ourselves and our children to others? I know I have been guilty of this.Motherhood is NOT a competitive sport. I don’t know exactly when I realized this, but it has been liberating. I can love my four children, praise their successes, and be unashamed about theirs and my own shortcomings (we ALL have them). I’m not less of a mother then my friend who has 8 children, or better than my friend who’s child didn’t pass the test for the advanced program at school—we are all mothers. Motherhood is not a game with winners or losers, it is a journey and I believe that one of our greatest resources are the others mothers we associate with—just remember, they need cheerleaders too!

National Convention - Lincoln, NE

National Convention was held the week of April 23 - 29, 2008 in Lincoln, NE. What an amazing congregation of people. Men and women from all over the country, in every different stage of life were present at the Annual AMI National Convention. Betsy Lowe accompanied Heather Deshler to convention. Heather was also joined by her husband and her parents. "What a great honor it is to be here among such outstanding women," says Deshler.

The convention was packed with various activities. From the onset with orientation, the mothers were actively participating at every gathering. The first night was BIG RED NIGHT. We had a traditional "Husker" dinner with folk singing and dancing. Later we were entertained by the Nebraska Husker Mascot:

Thursday was a very BIG day for all the State Young Mothers as they presented the audience with their three minute speeches. The pressure was on to get everything said in less than three minutes. Heather Deshler and Betsy Lowe at National Conveniton after her speech

Throughout the convention there were several workshops to attend offering information on the various program offered by AMI. Betsy Lowe and Heather Deshler attended workshops on Mother Mentoring, Chapter Group Development, Anti-Pornography (WRAP) and Public Awareness. Following the awards luncheon where the winners of the 5th Grade Essay Contest, Music Award, Literature Award, and Arts Awards, we were invited to tour the State Capital and have tea at the Governor's mansion.

Friday was another wonderful day filled with funny, heart felt and touching stories from the State Mother's of the Year. Following the speeches was the traditional Young Mother Luncheon honoring the 2007 National Young Mother, Mrs. Ansley Barnett. Friday night was the Gala for the Young Mothers, Mrs. Kimberly Shelton on New Hampshire was announced as the 2008 National Young Mother.

Saturday started with the Interfaith Memorials and Honors Breakfast. Later we heard from Jon Bruning, NE Attorney General. We had a wonderful lunch followed by speaker Gail Brand " Family Strengths". The afternoon was open for picture taking and personal time. That evening was the GRAND GALA where it was announced that Ellen Jo Blackwood was selected as the 2008 National Mother of the Year.

A highlight of this convention was that the Young Mothers, including Heather and Betsy were filmed in the process of making a documentary on motherhood. The documentary should air around Mother's Day 2009.

Mother's Day Celebration at the State Capital

It's the day before Mothers Day and mothers from all over the state of Kentucky gather at the State Capital in Frankfort, Kentucky to honor the thing they love most - motherhood.

Among those being honored are Mrs. Mary Lou Kirby, 2007 AMI Mother of the Year, and Mrs. Heather Deshler, 2008 AMI Young Mother from Kentucky.

Mrs. Vivian Foe, State President opened the meeting and presided over the business contucted. Betsy Lowe, National Literacy Chairperson and State President Elect presented Heather Deshler with citations from the Governor of Kentucky, Steve Bershear and from Senator Mitch McConnell. Mary Lou Kirby and Heather Deshler's names were added to the American Mother's Plaques that hang in the Capital builiding. Traditional photos were taken in the Rotunda. It was a very special day for those being honored and for mothers everywhere. Happy Mothers Day.

At the Annual State meeting of American Mothers, Inc. held on February 16, 2008. AMI conducted its annual auction to raise money to offset the cost of our MOY or YM going to convention. John Foe and Russ Morgan did an excellent job aucting off the items.

Pearl Taylor, search chairperson announced that Heather Lynn Deshler of Louisville, KY was selected as the State Young Mother. Mrs. Deshler will attend the American Mother's National Convention in Lincoln, Nebraska the last week in April later this year as a representative for her state. While there she will learn of the amazing programs AMI offers and bring something back to Kentucky.

Mrs. Deshler would like to start Mother-to-Mother chapter groups in the Louisville area during her year to serve. There will be a celebration to honor Mrs. Deshler in the Louisville area on March 22, 2008 at the Oldham County YMCA.

5th Grade Essay Contest Results

Winners: Marissa Lowe, Morgan Hayes, Lucy Sweetall, Mallory Price

On March 22, 2008 American Mother's Inc. announced the winners of the Annual 5th Grade Essay Contest. There were contestants from six different schools.

First Place went to Mallory Price of Goshen, KY. Mallory attends Liberty Elementary School. She wrote an eloquent essay honoring her mother. She was awarded a certificate and $25 gift certificate to Barnes and Nobles bookstore. Her essay is then entered into the National essay contest.

Second Place went to Lucy Sweetall of Prospect, KY. Lucy attends Goshen Elementary. She wrote of a time her mother comforted her. She won a $10 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble bookstore.

Third Place went to Morgan Hayes of Goshen, KY. She wrote beautiful words about all the things her mother does for her. She attends Liberty Elemenary. She too won $10 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble.

Honorable Mention went to Marissa Lowe of Prospect, KY. She wrote a wonderful essay expressing the love her mother shows and how someday she wants to be just like her mother. She won a $5 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble bookstore.

All 5th graders in the state of Kentucky are welcome to enter the contest. The contest will start up again on September 30, 2008.

2007 Kentucky Mother of the Year

American Mothers, Inc. has selected Mary Lou Kirby of Bowling Green, Kentucky as the State 2007 Mother of the Year. In April, Mrs. Kirby will represent Kentucky at the National Convention held in Florida. Please help me in congratulating Mrs. Kirby in this very distinguished honor. On Saturday, May 10, a Mother's Day celebration was held at the State Capital in Frankfort, KY. There her name was added to the plaque of those that have preceeded her in this great honor.
